The Compton Organ (1961) The present instrument stands in three chambers in the western gallery. The contract to build the organ was awarded to Compton's on the strength of their work at S. Bride's Fleet Street. Their recent work there helped give this instrument its renowned power. In the rush to complete the organ on time, the voicing was carried out when the church was still full of scaffolding and the advantageous gallery site and favourable acoustics were not taken into account sufficiently. The result was a 'devastating' sound and the pipes of the central case are surrounded to this day in absorbent soft board. Perhaps the last major organ to be built in the 'Romantic' style, it is an extremely versatile instrument which will play any repertoire convincingly. Surprisingly there is very little manual extension, with only one extended rank per manual, though there is more on the pedal. The 2579 pipes are located in three sections, the Great and Tuba in the central case, the Choir and Swell in the South chamber, and the Pedal in the North chamber. Specification
